Disney Recap 2016: Skipper Canteen

FriYAY! If you follow Disney Dining news like my mom and I do, you’ll know that a brand new restaurant opened up in Magic Kingdom this year: Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen! Located in Adventureland right across the road from the Swiss Family Robinson Tree House, this was a restaurant I knew I wanted to try as soon as I saw the word “curry.” The menu offers a wide selection of dishes inspired by the Jungle Cruise ride at the park. A menu with the flavors of Asia, South America and Africa is one that I’d never want to miss, and we were all excited to try something new!

IMG_5108I was glad to see that the restaurant had an allergy-friendly menu (like the one at Olivia’s), which indicated which dishes were good for particular top food allergies. As is the case with most Disney restaurants, the chef also came by to chat with me about my options. Months ago, when the restaurant opened, I read an article that was basically a photo tour of the menu. Bright colors and exotic flavors in each dish, all named after those great Jungle Cruise puns – I was hooked! As I mentioned before, I had my eye on the Curried Vegetable Crew Stew.

I was a little worried when I didn’t see it being listed as gluten-free – usually curries are a good bet (unless they are uber processed or have tomatoes) because most recipes are naturally gluten and dairy-free. When I asked the chef about this, he told me that it’s usually served with naan bread but that it would be gluten-free without the bread. Awesome!

IMG_5112Instead of the naan bread, he gave me some Ener-G rolls with warm spiced honey. Real honey! Y-U-M. The entrees came out shortly after, and let me tell you, that food was so good-looking. The vegetable curry and accompanying coconut rice were served in separate little bowls on a plate. I loved the bowls and plates that they used, and it looked like all of my favorite veggies were involved. And GUYS that curry was definitely as delicious as I hoped it would be.  I really liked the subtle coconut flavor in the rice and the spicy warmth of the curry. If we ever go back, I’ll probably get it again – it was that good!
